My journey from war in Sudan to new life in America As refugees from wars in the Middle East and Africa pour into Europe, and as immigration rages as a national argument in the United States, America still is the hope of the world, beckoning those desperate for a better life, or even just survival. In a gripping account of war and immigration, my book is a real-life thriller that will fascinate readers interested in a first-person account of the shocking violence and chaos that is scattering millions of refugees across the world. Over four million lives have been lost in the conflict in Sudan. I am a survivor of that devastating conflict. This 77,000-word book is the story of my life as a member of the Dinka people in South Sudan, of how sectarian and religious hatred shattered my life and broke apart my family. My name "Ater" in Dinka has several meanings, but my favorite is "perseverance." I am a tenacious person - an attribute that helped me survive war, starvation and the trials of refugee camps. Throughout all my ordeals in Africa, the possibility of one day immigrating to America for a better life drove me on. So this is a story of both Africa and America.
